Interview with Joe Hachem

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) 2009 is underway in Las Vegas and more than 6400 players fought for the first spot of 8.5 million. Joe Hachem who won the event in 2005 gave an interview with Poker News Daily.

Poker News Daily : the new structure of the Main Event at the World Series of Poker will surely swing the ability factor, non?

Hachem: the new structure is amazing. I think the results speak for themselves. The parties have so changed that the variance has become very high and the new structure will help to correct it. Which means more will get skills, plus you'll likely.

PND: the world of online poker has experienced very dramatic events in recent weeks in the United States. As an Australian, did you follow what has happened in the online poker community?

Hachem: absolutely. The U.S. remains the Mecca of poker and if the climate goes well there, it will be good everywhere around the world.

PND: rumors want that the Australian Government has a plan to block the "gambling" on the Internet. Other news also reported that it was not for the near future. What role do you think that you have to play to represent the rights of poker players?

Hachem: I'll do my best to represent and protect my sport, by all possible means.

PND: how are you feeling in your relationship with PokerStars?

Hachem: I have an excellent relationship with PokerStars. It continues to solidify and I am proud to be affiliated with them. PokerStars is not only the biggest poker site online, but it is also the best and the fairest of all sites. No other site does as much to promote poker.

PND: you were visited to get your opinion on upcoming promotions, updates of the site or the tournament series?

Hachem: one of the interesting things with PokerStars is that they constantly ask the opinion of their pro to improve the site. And, guess what? They listen.

PND: you have won a title in the WSOP and another in a World Poker Tour (WPT) and have won several million dollars. Do you think that you have reached the Summit of success at poker?

Hachem: I've never hidden that I want to be the greatest scholar of all time in poker and that is what keeps me competitive.

PND: this year, many people expected that the tournament is less popular, but, on the contrary, it was most popular. What observation would you want to focus on the level of the players present at the event?

Hachem: I've only really played as the Main Event. All I can say is that poker is becoming increasingly popular and solid and I have witnessed on the day 1 d where there were 2700 players. I said to myself: "What recession?"

PND: you have fans around the world who respect what you have done and your skills. Do you have some words for the people who follow your career?

Hachem: every year, I am surrounded by my humble admirers. They are cool and I still have time for them. I am grateful to them, for their support and it's nice to know that there are people who we
follow. Thank you.

I will soon publish my new book Pass The Sugar which is an autobiography that begins when I left Beirut in 1972 to date. I speak of my other accomplishments and World Series poker level. It is an interesting read and my fans will have the opportunity to better know me. Good luck and 'Pass The Sugar'.
