More news on the UIGEA

The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve Board today announced that the date of conformation of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) has been postponed by six months, so June 1, 2010.

This period is an important victory for poker on the Internet as well as for the Poker Players Alliance, which has presented the petition to this effect. Decision gives Congress six months to revise the law, clarifying the definition of ' unlawful games of chance on the Internet"so as to distinguish the poker of the so-called «gambling».»

"The APP is extremely satisfied with the decision by the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department, which is to grant the period of six months," said the current president of l APP and former Senator, Alfonse D'Amato, through a press release. "This is a great victory for poker, but it is even greater for proponents of a good public policy and equitable. These months are essential to give legislators time to clarify l UIGEA and adopt laws to regulate the profession of player of poker next year."

John Pappas, Executive Director of the CAE, think that this six-month period could really help the cause of poker. It could react the members of Congress who support the licensing and regulation of the Internet poker industry.

"I think that this will require the Congress to act quickly rather than see the problem in thinking what they can live with for the year," said Pappas. "I hope qu it s will make a change to the Senate Chamber." "If there is good progress that s operate, we have good hope qu another period we will be granted."

Rep Barney Frank (d-Massachusetts), who helped get this time, scheduled a hearing Thursday to the House Financial Services Committee.  He wanted to open the debate on bills HR 2266, reasonable prudence in Regulation Act, and HR 2267, which deals with the game on the Internet, the regulations, and the protection of consumers.

"This will allow us to act quickly with my legislation to undo this regulatory excess, brought by the Bush administration," said Frank in a press release.

The CAE filed a joint motion on 18 September with the National Thoroughbred Racing Association the American Greyhound Track Operators Association.

In its decision, the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve Board have acknowledged receiving letters of support to the petition signed by regulated financial institutions, associations representing regulated financial institutions, as well as the members of Congress.

After years d attacks Congress as well as the Department of justice towards the industry, it seems that the wind turns now in favour of poker on the Internet.

"I think that we had a lot of small victories that led to a change in the way in which a Congressman to see our problem", said Pappas. "... but I think that it might be the highlight for a major change." This really puts pressure on the shoulders of the Congress. It must be something during this period of time, and we hope that we will get change. This is why the hearing of Frank next week could not better time. "
